and down as it rolls over road undulations, without affecting its fellow, for very good technical reasons which, incidentally, the great Ettore Bugatti always scorned. This simple Morgan ifs arrangement was united by transverse tubes which were attached to the 4/4's frame by steel plates. Power for the new Morgan was at first supplied by a neat little Coventry-Climax water-cooled four-cylinder engine with overhead inlet and side exhaust valves, of 63 x 90 mm bore and stroke, giving a capacity of 1,122 cc. This being just outside the popular 1,100 cc competition class, a shrunken version of this engine was later evolved for racing. A Moss four-speed gearbox was mounted separately from the engine, a decidedly vintage feature by 1936, but what Morgan isn't of vintage concept? The gear ratios were 17.6, 12.0, 6.5 and 5.0 to 1, horribly low in the eyes of members of the then recently formed Vintage Sports Car Club, but well-suited to the aforesaid mud trials. |
